Çiğdem Sezer

Born in Trabzon, Turkey, Sezer graduated from Ankara Gevher Nesibe Health Education Institute. She worked as a nurse and a teacher. Her poems were published in various literary magazines such as Kıyı, Karşı, Çağdaş Türk Dili and Varlık. After her first book of poems Kanadı Atlas Kuşlar (1991), she received Dünya Book Magazine Poetry Award for Çılgın Su (1993); Orhon Murat Arıburnu Poetry Award for Bir Şehrin Hatıra Fotoğraflarından (1998); 2006 Ceyhun Atuf Kansu Poetry Award for Dünya Tutulması (2005) and 2017 Dağlarca Poetry Award for Küçük Şeyler Mevsimi (2016). Kapalı Gişe Hüzünler (1996), Denizden Geçme Hali (2009) and Eyvah Annem Şiir Yazıyor (2017) were among her other poetry books. Sezer wrote books in different genres. Besides her city monographies and biography books, she is the author of novels Aşklar ve Baharatlar (2008) and Mavi Çayırın Kadınları (2013). The author received Türkan Saylan Art Award for her children’s poetry book Alfabeden Kaçan Harfler (2014) and ODTÜ Schools Children’s Literature Award for her children’s novel Juju Beni Unutma (2015). In 2018 she wrote a picture book series named “Bayan Şeftali ve Alya”. Hayal Vadisi (2011), Gizemli Yabancı (2014), Şahane Ekip (2015) and Kayıp Gerdanlık (2017) are among her many young adult novels. These were followed by Missing Spring (Saklı Bahar, 2017) published by ON8 and Life Patisserie (Hayat Pastanesi, 2017) that is part of the “Bridge Books” collection of Günışığı Kitaplığı. Her novel Truck Cafe (Kamyon Kafe, 2019), which entered the 2020 Honour List of IBBY, was followed by her poetry book Laughter Cake (Kahkaha Keki, 2020). Her young adult novel The Last Chance Stop (Son Şans Durağı, 2021) depicts the story of a group of young people who all come from poor and broken families. The epic poem celebrating the 100th year anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, The Hundred-Year-Old Plane Tree (Yüz Yaşında Bir Çınar, 2023) brought her together with famous artist Mustafa Delioğlu. Her latest children’s novel The Tender Breadstick (İçli Bir Çubuk Kraker, 2024) tells a story of growing up. Sezer lives in Ankara with her husband. She has a daughter and a son.
