Short Story Competition

Günışığı Kitaplığı, publishing contemporary books that get children and young adults closer to literature, is inviting 6th, 7th and 8th graders to writing short stories!

To embalm Zeynep Cemali, beloved and master author of stories which enriched the lives of Turkish children, Günışığı Kitaplığı is inviting those children on the verge of becoming youngsters to express their feelings, thoughts and observations by writing.

Purpose of this competition is to encourage the correct and substantial use of Turkish, to enrich the education lives of children and to motivate them to become the future people.

Every year a different theme is selected from one of the books of Zeynep Cemali and a sentence selected from this book is given as an inspiration to the participants.

The first children’s book written by Zeynep Cemali , and published by Günışığı Kitaplığı in 1999 is Ben, Çınar Ağacı ve Pufböreği (Puff Pastry, The Oak Tree and Me). Gül Sokağı’nın Dikenleri (The Thorns of Rose Street) which was published the following year, had proven that she’s a master and strong story teller. Cemali had succeeded to develop her distinctive story telling language in her novels. With her novels such as Patenli Kız (The Girl on Roller Skates) and Ballı Çörek Kafeteryası (Honey Cookie Café) which are woven with stories and her story books such as Çılgın Babam  (My Eccentric Dad) and Öykü Öykü Gezen Kedi (The Cat Strolling Through Stories) she reached thousands of readers from all ages. Zeynep Cemali who passed away in İstanbul in November 2009, left her last novel Ankaralı (Woman from Ankara) behind, which won Türkan Saylan Arts Award in 2011.
