THE TENDER BREADSTICK

Çiğdem Sezer

Editor: Müren Beykan

Even wooden birds can sing when hearts rejoice with love.

Çiğdem Sezer, one of the multi-award-winning poets of our literature, tells the growing up story of a curious and brave child. While witnessing the life in the neighbourhood, the child tries to create her own story and the warm relationship she establishes with people of different ages blends the past and the present. The novel, which glorifies love and compassion, offers inspiration on many issues from choosing a profession to solidarity.

Nurgül likes to perch on the tree tops and watch what is going on in the neighbourhood. Her best friend is Mrs. Şahika, an old woman who lives in the old mansion. Preparing for the high school entrance exam, Nurgül takes her neighbour Bedir under her wing as he is about to drop out of school because of the bullies in his class. When Mrs. Şahika quietly disappears one day and the furniture of the mansion starts to be moved, Nurgül becomes very worried. With the support of her family and wood carver Bedir, she sets out to find her dear friend…
