Kerem Evrandır
Editor: Müren Beykan
Turkish illustrators: Sadi Güran
A mystery-filled adventure in Ottoman İstanbul!
In his first novel for young adults, Kerem Evrandır tells a breathtaking adventure set among fires and the tulumbacılar –volunteer firefighters who operated hand-pumped fire engines in 19th century İstanbul. Distinguished by its vivid historical atmosphere, this powerful story centres on courage, belonging, justice and loss. As it leads readers through the streets of Ottoman İstanbul, around a mysterious medallion and a deep bond with the sea, it also follows the trail of hope.
Overview
A great fire in Balat, on the shores of the Golden Horn, turns Denizoğlan’s life upside down overnight. The thirteen-year-old boy, whose names means “son of the sea”, finds himself caught in a dangerous chase between bandits and the tulumbacı firefighters while trying to save the medallion entrusted to him by his father. From the walls of Galata to the shores of the Golden Horn, and even into the cold currents of the Bosphorus, this fierce struggle forces him to confront the ruthless bandit leader Kızıl Bayram, who is determined to seize the medallion. With the tracking skills of the young journalist Alina and the streetwise children living among the ruins of an old house, Denizoğlan continues the fight. But will he ever be reunited with his father and find the medallion?..
