The opinion leader of humanist approach in Turkey who has also started the famous “Blue Voyages” in the search for traces of ancient Anatolian civilizations, Azra Erhat is telling children about the myths of Çanakkale region. The book narrating the myths about Troy with a simple language is enriched with the original illustrations of cartoonist Ferruh Doğan.

Overview

There are many books and films about the War of Troy which lasted for 10 years according to the Iliad of famous Anatolian historian and poet Homer. Poetic translations of the epic sagas of  Iliad  and Odysseus by Azra Erhat and poet A. Kadir and Mythology Dictionary she prepared in 1972 about Greek and Roman Mythology are still the most competent sources in this field.. Troya Masalı (Tale of Troy), which is first published in 1981 is a result of Erhat’s  endeavours to get children acquainted with Anatolian myths.

 

Azra Erhat

Azra Erhat was born in Istanbul in 1915. After graduating from Ankara University, Faculty of Languages and History-Geography, she became a research assistant in the Department of Classical Philology. She also worked as a journalist for some time. In addition to Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, she translated the works of ancient Greek philosophers into Turkish. Many of her  translations were published in periodicals. Erhat, who together with The Fisherman of Halikarnassus (Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı) and Sabahattin Eyüboğlu, coined the literary term “Blue Cruise” is one of the precursors of the humanist philosophy in Turkey.
