This book by Behiç Ak, the famous and beloved humorist, belongs to his “Cheerful Stories” collection. The story takes place in a neighbourhood  alongside the Bosporus Istanbul.  In this book, the writer once more deals with one of the most debated modern time issues in a dramatic way. Ak fictionalizes the adverse effect of increasing number of buildings in the city growing as a metropolis, tells the relationship between people and environment not only with words but also with fantastic illustration that make the reader smile. Just like other books of the writer, this book is enjoyed both by children and adults.

Overview

Fırat who lives in one of the villages alongside the Bosporus with his brother Emre and his mother who is an extraordinary storyteller,  crosses over to the opposite shore by ferry and sells balloons on his free days . Their neighbour Ms.Meliha who lives in a century old wooden mansion often invites them to her home where they spend happy times together. However, one day when Ms. Meliha had to move out of her house, the neighbourhood started  to change and gradually lose its beauty. And when the small Bosporus ferry is put out of service, Fırat realizes that it is time to take an action.

Behiç Ak

He was born in Samsun and studied architecture in Yıldız University and  İstanbul Technical University. He’s a well-known cartoonist, author, illustrator and documentary film director. He illustrates daily cartoons for the Cumhuriyet Newspaper since 1982. His cartoons were exhibited in several countries like Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Besides his plays Separation (Ayrılık) and Building (Bina), his two plays named Fault Line (Fay Hattı) and City for One (Tek Kişilik Şehir) were staged in Europe and attracted big interest.
